A meeting of the Howell library board was called to order at 7PM Present were Theodore Krieger, chairman, Mrs. Harry L. Williams and Leslie B. Merritt.
Mrs. Ina Hight, librarian, reported some shrubbery about the grounds needed replacing. Her request was approved, as a safety measure, to have bayonets removed from old guns in the DAR museum room. She said she would like more shelving in the reading room and if possible this project is to coordinate with proposed redecorating. Mrs. Hight informed the board some Farm Bureau woman were urging a county library but requested no action on the part of this board.
The librarian recommended discontinuing the rental shelf of books as it does not pay financially. A plan was recommended of offering books that usually go on this shelf free for one week, then charge two cents per day thereafter, as it was thought this would keep the books in circulation at a minimum cost to patrons.
Mrs. Hight suggested a figured wall paper above reading room fireplaces be considered a part of redecorating plans.
A bid from Joe Grostic was received to furnish labor and material for redecorating the interior of the main floor exclusive of the book room for $940. Walls and ceilings: one coat of primer and sealer, tinted to color of finish coat and one coat of flat oil paint in color to suit. Woodwork to be touched up with stain, and one coat of varnish. All materials used are to be standard brand. Workmen are covered by Michigan State accident insurance.
Moved by Mrs. Williams, supported by Mr. Merritt, that the bid of Mr. Grostic be incorporated into the budget for the year, but approval of the work be withheld until City Council may approve the recommended budget. Carried
Pay of library personnel was discussed. The following scale was voted by Mr. Merritt, seconded by Mrs. Williams on condition city Council accepts budget recommendation. Mrs. Hight, librarian $150 per month Mrs. Lannen, assistant librarian, $1.20 per hour clerk hire, $1.00 per hour. One week's vacation with pay allowed regularly employed staff. Carried.
It was agreed to close the library all day Wednesday during July and August.
