Mr. W.H.S. Wood
Howell, Michigan.
Dear Sir:-
We are pleased to learn that you are building a Carnegie Library and hope that you will be very successful with the undertaking. It is certainly very generous
of Mr. Carnegie to distribute his money so freely and we know that the people will appreciate the efforts of some of your citizens who were instrumental in getting the money.
We are this day forwarding to you a copy of our large 'Illustrated Catalogue of Standard and Holiday Books'. We would especially call you attention to the
introduction to this catalogue.
When you have made up the list of titles you desire to purchase we hope to receive the same as an order, or to have an opportunity to quote our prices on the same.
Very truly yours,
A.C. McClurg & Co.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
WASHINGTON, D.C.
W.H.S. Wood,
Howell, Mich.
Feb. 27, 1903
Dear Mr Wood:-
I enclose some correspondence from the Commissioner of Patents. I feared that they would not vary from what seems to me a very rigid rule in these matters.
You will notice that the Gazette goes to the Ladies LIbrary at Howell and as doubtless all your libraries will be tranferred to the Carnegie Library,
you will get the advantage of it for the present, and when the new list is made up, I shall be glad to make the change.
Yours truly
S. ? Smith -

Feb. 25, 1903
Having secured nearly a thousand books from the U.S. Departments by direct appeal without Congressional aid, the only refusals being the National
Museum & the US Patent Office Gazette, I then wrote Hon. S.W. smith, M.C. for further aid in securing books and received the following.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE
WASHINGTON
Feb. 23, 1903
W.H.S. Wood
Howell, Mich.
Dear Mr. Wood:-
I have your two favors of the 5th and should have replied sooner but have been in Michigan for a short time. I shall be very glad to comply with your
request just so far as possible. The official Weekly Gazette at my disposal has been disposed of, but when the list is again presented to me, I will try and remember
your library. there, in fact, I will write the Commissioner of Patents and ask him if he will not increase my list one, and at once commence to send the publications there.
What have you for yourself and the library in the way of geological reports and would you like to have me send to that library copies of Eulogies so far as I can?
After Congress adjourns, I will be in Howell and perhaps at that time we could take up the matter and I might be able to supply the library with volumes on various subjects
that they are not now in possession of, if so, I shall be very glad to do so.
Regarding the things you asked for yourself, I will give the matter early attention and shall be glad to supply you with just as many of them as possible.
Truly yours,
S. ? Smith
