Meeting Minutes: June 2, 1936 On the evening of June 2nd (Tues.) a meeting of the Library Board was held in the Library, Mr. Bush president in the chair, Mr. Strobel treasurer and Mrs. Gillette secretary being present.
Bal. of $1400.00 in treasury reported.
After a discussion of needed repairs, it was decided an inspection of roof be made and a coat of paint applied if it can be arranged economically.
Necessary repairs to radiator pipes were also ordered.
Furniture for committee room in basement was talked but it was decided to take no action on same till tax money has been received.

April 8. The Library Commission met at the library on Thurs. evening Apr. 8th 1937, Pres. Bush, Mr. Strobel and Mrs. Gillette being present.
Minutes of last meeting read and approved.
On recommendation of the President, the Assistant librarian Estelle Bennett and the janitor E. E. Papworth were given $5.00 per month increase respectively, making the salaries $33.80 and $65.00.
Literature concerning bills pending on State Aid and State Board for Libraries and a communication from the librarian of Detroit Library concerning same were read and the Board instructed the secretary to frame a resolution to the legislators of the State and present same to our Representative, Hon. Chas. P. Adams.
Application from Child's Conservation League for use of S.E. room in library basement for a story hour on Sat. afternoons, equipment and supervisor to be furnished by aforesaid organization was read. The request was granted with the proviso that the furniture placed in the room be suitable for adults as well as children.
The portion of the City Charter which states the duties of the Library Com. was read by Pres. Bush.
The three members of the Com. made an inspection tour of the basement rooms with a view to their occupancy by various and diversified groups.

Apr. 23 The Library Commission met at the library on Fri. evening April 23rd.
Dr. Homer M. Noble having been appt. by Mayor Adams in place of Mr. Bush, the meeting was called to order by the Secretary of the former Commission Mrs. Gillette and the election of officers followed.
Dr. Noble, Chairman of the board Mrs. Gillette, secretary and Mr. Strobel, treas.
Dr. Noble presiding, the secretary’s report was read and approved.
A request from Howell Woman's Club was read in which the use of rooms in the basement of the library was asked. Motion was made that the committee from the club be invited to meet with the Library Commission at the library Thurs. evening Apr. 29th for discussion of the plan. Carried. The secretary was instructed to write Mrs. W. P. Van Winkle to that effect.
A tour of basement of the library was made by the Commission with the idea of occupancy of the rooms by different organizations.
After a discussion of the various phases of the duties of the Board, the meeting adjourned.

Meeting Minutes: Aug. 8, 1938 The Library Commission met at the library on Tues evening Aug 9th, Dr. Noble, Mr. Strobel and Mrs Gillette present. Minutes of last meeting read & approved. After an inspection of the basement of the building action was taken to get an estimate of painting walls and floor in D.A.R. museum, S.W. room of library basement. Motion made and carried to obtain estimate also of new pipes necessary in the building's plumbing. Motion made and carried two fire extinguishers be purchased of Lloyd Beebe at $15.00 each.

Page 435 Motion made and carried Mr. Strobel secure an estimate on one coat of paint for roof. The Treasurer reported bal. on hand $197.89 - tax money to be deposited to our credit any day. Total expenditures for the year: $3371.95. Paid for books and rebinding: $877.09. Advisability of choosing a committee for selection of books to act in cooperation with the librarian was discussed but no action taken. Motion made and carried the salary of Mrs. Bennett be raised from $33.80 per mo. to $40.00, Mrs. Gillette being instructed to inform her of the increase. Action taken that two iron benches be placed one on east curb and one on west curb of library lawn, the same to be purchased by Civic Com. at their suggestion. This is an experiment and should it prove unsatisfactory said benches may be removed. Motion made and carried Mr. Strobel purchase coal for coming year from H.W. Perry and Purdy and Woodruff. Meeting Minutes (Continued): Dr. Noble phoned the City Clerk Mr. Hill and learned the City Council about Oct 1st granted Eleanor Briggs who has been substituting for her father and have planned to pay this amount out of the City Treasury to relieve the library fund
. If this plan is continued the library commission will pay Mr. Papworth his full salary until he is able to return to work or at least for a reasonable length of time
. Discussion of a book committee finished the business session but no decision was reached
