  • This photograph is of the alleyway dividing the 100 block of North State Stree, Howell, Michigan, and was taken as part of documentation for the R/UDAT Study, 1984.  In view of the Walking Tour, is the alleyway, Michigan Avenue, and unknown person.

    In 1983, the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce applied for a R/UDAT (Regional/Urban Design Assistance Team) study, an American Institute of Architects program that brought a team of professionals to the city for a four-day period to study Howell's downtown, its ability to compete for regional shopping, and to make recommendations for improvements to re-vitalize the city.  The team, in 1984, during the study took photographs, interviewed people, held forums, and in the end provided an outline of strategies.

  • This photograph is of the westside of the 100 block of North State Street, Howell, Michigan, and was taken as part of documentation for the R/UDAT Study, 1984.  In view is the alleyway that divides the block between 106 and 110 North State Street.

  • This is a photograph of Allie Davis Bennett, born 1872, died 1958.  Notes with the photograph: "Lyle's mother, married George Bennett.  Lyle was born in 1896.  George married a woman named Margaret in 1918".    This photograph was with the Hardy Family Collection.
  • Alpheus and Emelia Smith Cabin, Chilson, Michigan

    Hiram Smith was born in this cabin. The site of the store Alpheus owned is at the northwest corner of the intersection of Chilson and Brighton Roads. This cabin is about 1/4 mile west of the railroad tracks behind the store.  They soon moved to a farm and home that is present day 4389 Chilson Rd.

    The son of Richard and Elizabeth Smith. Inherited land in Genoa Township, Livingston County, Michigan from Alpheus's father.

  • This is a portrait of Amos Adams, Howell, Livingston, Michigan.  Amos was a son of Samuel Adams, a Revolutionary War soldier.   Amos was born November 25, 1783 at Dublin, New Hampshire.  He died May 14, 1855 at Howell, Livingston, Michigan, and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Howell.  He was a surveyor and hotel keeper according to the label on his portrait.

    Amos was married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Wright.

    Amos Adams' children were Adeline, Eveline, Abigail, John Quincy, Amos Stone, and Angeline.
  • This is a portrait of Amos E. Steele who was elected to the Michigan Legislature in 1839.  He represented a district that was composed of Livingston and Ingham counties.

    Amos E. Steele was born in 1806 and died in 1878.

  • This is a portrait of Amos Stone Adams, son of Amos and Elizabeth (Wright) Adams.  Amos Stone Adams was born June 5, 1821, and died approximately May 1863.   He was the son of Amos Adams, who came to Howell, Michigan in 1835 from Geneseo, New York.

    Amos Stone Adams married Melissa M. Townsend.
