The Howell Library Board met Tuesday October 18, at 8:00PM in the library, in the Michigan Room. Present were: Mr. Engelhardt, Mr. Lyon, Dr. Eaton, Mrs. McCloskey, Mrs. Hight and Mrs. Gatesman. The minutes of the September meeting were read and approved.
There was a report of the house committee, concerning the ceiling in the children's' room. Mr. Cunningham, who agreed to do it for $267.00 or $200.00 it was decided by the board, to have him (to) do it.
The new state library plan was discussed and the roof and the ceiling in the rear hall were also under consideration
The front steps had been repaired. This was considered to be a regular job for the janitor.
Mrs. Hight read a letter of complaint from Mr. Shindorf, about Mr. Aldrich. The board decided Mrs. Hight would suggest duties of each man, no Mr. Shindorf and that the orders would cocme from Mrs. Hight.

There was no regular meeting of the Howell Library Board in July, however,, Mr. Engelhardt, Mr. Lyon, Dr. Eaton and Mrs. Gatesman met with Mrs. Hight in the Michigan Room, in the library, for a short time. She had brought up a great number of books, that for a number of years had been stored in the basement. A discussion followed concerning what to do with them and a number of suggestions were made. It was decided that Mrs. Hight sell them at her discretion.
The Howell Library Board met Tuesday, August 16 at 7:30PM, in the library. Present were: Mr. Engelhardt, Mr. Lyon, Dr. Eaton, Mrs. Hight and Mrs. Gatesman.
The minutes of the June meeting were read and approved.
The ceiling in the children's room had fallen. A tile ceiling was suggested and bids were to be sought. Because of this new calamity, instead of having new front steps, as had been planned, the janitor will be asked to fill the caverns, apertures or so-called holes with patching plaster.
The janitor thought a tree near the windows in the adult reading room, should be cut down, to let in more light. The board decided against this, mainly because Mrs. Gatesman made such a fuss.
Mrs. Hight is greatly in need of more cupboards and should have a real work-room and would like to use the Michigan Room. Some librarians have memorial rooms or outside benches for passers-by, drop boxes for returning book and drinking fountains, donated by interested people.
A letter to Mrs. Hight concerning a new distribution of penal fines was read, briefly discussed and later was sent to Mr. Norman, city manager.
Mrs. Hight reported that Mary O'Lone who has been Mrs. Hight's assistant, is returning to school. Her volunteer help is not too dependable. Also the city council had given permission to use a loud speaker on the day of the book fair.

The Howell Library Board met Tuesday, September 20, at 7:30PM at the library. Present were: Mr. Engelhardt, Mr. Lyon, Dr. Eaton, Mrs. Hight and Mrs. Gatesman. The minutes of the August meeting were read and approved.
There had been no bids on the replacement of the ceiling in the children's room, but acoustical tile seemed inadvisable. The house committee: Dr. Eaton and Mr. Lyon were asked to look into this ceiling problem.
There was a brief report on the Book Fair and its great success.
There was a brief discussion on the penal fines and the new state library plan.
Mrs. Hight read a letter she was sending to the city council, answering questions Mr. Norman had asked also stating some of her problems.

The Howell Library Board met Tuesday May 17, at 7:30PM at the library. Present were: Mr. Engelhardt, Mr. Lyons, Mrs. McCloskey, Mrs. Hight and Mrs. Gatesman.
The minutes of the March 22 meeting were read and approved.
It was reported the recent electric wiring cost $300.00. Extra work will cost $100.00. The tiling in the ceiling of the D.A.R. room cost $187.00. The D.A.R. museum room still needs more work. There is no more money in the budget for any more big jobs. There was $1,000.00 for jobs. The ceiling also cost $267.11. It was suggested that Mrs. Hight list other big jobs needing to be done in order to get them into the June budget. Prices on new front steps to the library were to be obtained.
The library is still very much in need of more voluntary help.
The board must decide on putting shelves in the D.A.R. room. A request was made to the D.A.R but was rejected. Extra space for books is badly needed. This was tabled to be discussed at the next meeting.

It was moved by Dr. Eaton and seconded by Mrs. Hight and carried unanimously to reserve the north and east walls in the D.A.R. room for more shelves for books.

The Howell Library Board met Tuesday February 16, 1960 at 7:30PM in the library. Preset were Mr. Englehardt, Mr Lyons, Mrs. McClosky, Mrs. Hight and Mrs. Gatesman.
The minutes of the January 19 meeting were read and approved.
Mrs. Hight reported that the electrical work was about completed and it was suggested that Mr. Norman the city manager be asked to come to inspect the work when it is entirely completed.
Mr. Englehardt said he had met with Mr. Bath, the superintendent of schools and Mr. Schiffer, principal of the High School, regarding a cooperation of the high school library and the city library. A committee was formed which included Mrs. Hight, Mr. Ladner, president of the friends of library, Mrs. Jamieson from the school library and Mr. Ward, school business manager. This committee has met and discussed cooperation of the libraries. It is though this idea must go slowly.
Mrs. Hight said more coal was needed and it was to be ordered. Also Mrs. Hight can use another typewriter and the city can purchase her on for $25.00.
Mr. Stanley Warner said he could have the ceiling work in the D.A.R. room for $199.50 and would himself give out the work.
There is a catalogue box with World War II records in it, in the library, which is never used and Mrs. Hight will use this box for a children's card catalogue.
The budget was discussed and it was moved by Mrs. Gatesman, seconded by Mrs. McCloskey and voted unanimously to accept the 1960-1961 budget of $10,890.00.
The meeting adjourned, the next meeting to be March 15, 1960, at 7:30PM in the library.
The Howell Library Board met Tuesday, March 22, 1960 at 7:30PM in the library. Present were Mr. Englehardt, Mr. Lyons, Mrs. Hight, Mrs. McCloskey and Mrs. Gatesman.
The minutes of the February 16 meeting were read and with the exception of one small correction were approved.
Mrs. Hight said Mr. Norman had inspected the recent electrical work. Mr. Englehardt suggested that Mr. Norman be asked the cost of this work.
Mrs. Hight spoke of not having a work room or a place to store supplies. The possibility of shelves just beyond and outside the office was discussed. It was thought it would cost about $125.00 for shelves.
A suggestion was also made to send cards to board members, notifying them, about a week in advance of board meetings.
Mrs. Hight told of her activities having to do with library work. She has attended a library workshop every three years, has visited other libraries in Flint, Owosso and Perry and had attended a convention in Ann Arbor, the week previous to the board meeting. he had also had a meeting of county librarians in our library to discuss regional and county libraries.
Mrs. Hight reported that three copies of the History of Howell by Crittenden were lost and because of a similar incident, she had had to replace two encyclopedias.
The second typewriter was purchased for $20.00 and the children's card file was set up.
It was moved by Mrs. Gatesman and seconded by Mrs. McCloskey and carried unanimously that any books Mrs. Hight discards from the library shelves may be sold at the Book Fair whish is being planned by the Friends of the Library. A discussion of the Book Fair followed.

The Howell Library Board met Tuesday, November 17, 1959 at 7:30PM in the library. Present were: Mr. Engelhardt, Mr. Lyon, Mrs. Hack, Mrs. Hight and Mrs. Gatesman.
The minutes of the October meeting were read and after a small correction were approved.
Mr. Engelhardt reported that he had talked with Mr. Bath, the superintendent of schools and Mr. Scheiffer, principal of the High School regarding the possibility of having some of the school library books placed in our library. They visited our library but no commitments were made.
Mr. Engelhardt also reported on the trip some of us had made to the Ann Arbor Library as did Mrs. Hight on our trip to Adrian, Blissfield and Owosso.
A motion was made by Mrs. Hoch seconded by Mr. Lyon and carried unanimously, that petty cash collected from fines and rental fees, after $25.00, which must be turned over to the city, be allowed Mrs. Hight, to use at her discretion. This would make it possible for her to hire another page.
It was decided to not hold a December Board meeting and the meeting was adjourned, the next meeting to be January 19, 1960. Respectfully submitted, Lillie Gatesman, record. secty.
The Howell Library Board met Tuesday, January 19, 1960 at 7:30PM in the library. Preset were, Mr. Engelhardt, Mr. Lyons, Mrs. McCloskey, Mrs. Hight and Mrs. Gatesman.
The minutes of the November 19, 1959 meeting were read and approved, there not having been a December meeting. The resignation of Mrs. Hach was read and accepted with regrets. Your (?) secretary was instructed to write Mrs. Hach and to tell her how she would be missed on the board because of her excellent participation. There was a brief discussion concerning a new board member.
Mrs. Hight again review in detail our trip to Owosso, to their library and their invitation to our library to join them in the formation of a regional library. Such a move will mean much work and whether or not we will make such a decision, it was decided that there wasn't anything to be lost and probably something to be gained, to try to find out (what) how other libraries in Livingston County feel about it. Accordingly, Mrs. Hight will try to call a meeting of other librarians before our February board meeting.
Mrs. Hight also spoke of her magazine subscriptions and how much could be saved by ordering for these years at a time, because of the money output, it was suggested she might group them and order a few in this way each year, until all are on a three year basis. She was going to look into this to see if as much could be saved.(in this way).
The library is still open on Wednesdays from 12:00 noon to (Friday) 5:00PM.
No electrical work has yet been done and Mr. Howard who has been given the job says the library must be closed for thee days to the work. Mrs. Hight will put the dates in the paper in order to notify the public. The floor problem where finish is worn off, again came up, but as tabled until the February meeting.
There was a short discussion on the budget to be completed in February.
