This photograph is of 201 North State Street, Howell, Michigan, and was taken as part of documentation for the R/UDAT Study, 1984. In 1984, this building housed the Probate and Juvenile Court, and previously was the Detention Center for Livingston County.
In 1983, the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce applied for a R/UDAT (Regional/Urban Design Assistance Team) study, an American Institute of Architects program that brought a team of professionals to the city for a four-day period to study Howell's downtown, its ability to compete for regional shopping, and to make recommendations for improvements to re-vitalize the city. The team, in 1984, during the study took photographs, interviewed people, held forums, and in the end provided an outline of strategies.

Livingston County Jail and Sheriff's Residence, Howell, Michigan
This image was included on the 1st National Bank Calendar. It is a photo of the Livingston County Jail and Sheriff's residence that was built around 1888. In May 1887, the Livingston County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to locate the new jail on the west side of the Court House Square in the village of Howell, Michigan.
The Jail continued to be used until 1949 when it was condemned due to its age, unsafe and unsanitary conditions. The new county jail and sheriff residence was built in 1950.
