    From Howell Bicentennial History 1776-1976 this photo is captioned "In November 1907 a train went through Howell, Michigan headed south.  Another train left Ann Arbor, Michigan about the same time. It was late at night and it was a one track line. About 3:20 AM they met at Lakeland, Michigan between Howell, Michigan and Ann Arbor, Michigan. This picture shows the result"

    Ann Arbor Railroad Wrecked Car near Wright Elevator This image, along with other smaller and limited injury/loss accidents and abandonments where this statement is included, are believed to have combined over the years into the myth of a "Locomotive" in the swamp adjacent to the 1886 TAA&NM depot. likely, only pieces of rolling stock such as wood frame cars that were too costly to retrieve as opposed to replace, if any, remain. Some of these pieces are said to be visible during extreme dry spells.

    This is a photograph of the Ann Arbor Railroad engine, believed to be taken in Howell, Livingston, Michigan.

    Through a quick Google maps reference, using the center home, now McDonald's funeral home, and the extremely characteristic stone block house at the foot of Higgins, this photo was taken from the general area of the foot of Walnut Street, either on or near the Ann Arbor Railroad Depot grounds or where the parking lot now resides. The subject is Ann Arbor No. 1, ordered in 1941 and the first diesel locomotive of the Ann Arbor railroad. The nature of the locomotive paint has me thinking that this photo was taken in the 1940s or very early 1950s, and as No. 1 was almost exclusively used as the dedicated switcher for the Owosso Yard, this photo could be of either a special move, or the delivery of the locomotive itself from another interchange to the Owosso Yard as by all indications, the unit with caboose is facing north in that direction.

    This photograph is of the Ann Arbor Railway and Depot, located at the intersection of North Walnut and Wetmore Streets, Howell, Michigan, and was taken as part of documentation for the R/UDAT Study, 1984.  In this view, looking west,  from the Michigan Avenue Bridge is the depot, train tracks, Holkins lumber, and part of a parking lot.

    In 1983, the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce applied for a R/UDAT (Regional/Urban Design Assistance Team) study, an American Institute of Architects program that brought a team of professionals to the city for a four-day period to study Howell's downtown, its ability to compete for regional shopping, and to make recommendations for improvements to re-vitalize the city.  The team, in 1984, during the study took photographs, interviewed people, held forums, and in the end provided an outline of strategies.

    This photograph is of Ann Arbor Railroad Tracks, near Barnard Street,  Howell, Michigan, and was taken as part of documentation for the R/UDAT Study, 1984.  In this west looking view are the railroad tracks and in the distance the Court Street Bridge.
