A meeting of the Howell Library Board was called to order at 7PM
Present were Theodore Krieger, chairman Leslie Meritt, secretary, Mrs. Karl Hoch and Mrs. Lillian Gatesman. Absent Mrs. Gerald McCloskey.
Minutes of the meeting of November 14 were read and approved.
Mrs. Hight librarian asked that Mrs. Warner be hired one more day and evening to keep meet the demand for services at the library. Mrs. Hoch moved Mrs. Warner be placed on a 26 hour work basis. This was supported by Mr. Merritt and carried.
Mrs. Hight said she would need more clerical help soon. She cited another need of long standing was to bring the card catalogue up to date.
Mrs. Gatesman reported on progress in arrangements for the Francis Line travel movie lecture 'Best of the West' on February 21 at the school auditorium. Mr. Krieger said he would write the Collector of Internal Revenue for instructions on the tax obligation, if any, in connection with this lecture.
It was reported City Manager Tholen has had recent interviews in regard to roof, cornice and eaves repairs to the library building.
The remainder of the time was spent in discussing details of a new budget with this to be continued at the next meeting tentatively set for February 6 at 7PM Adjournment was at 9:20PM Leslie B. Merritt, secretary

A meeting of the Howell Library Board was called to order at 7PM.
Present were Theodore Krieger, chairman, Leslie Merritt, secretary, Mrs. Karl Hoch, Mrs. Lillian Gatesman and Mrs. Gerald McCloskey, Absent: none
Minutes of the meeting of September 20 were read and approved.
Mrs. Hight, librarian, reported she had bought a desk and chairs from Citizens Mutual for the library at an expenditure of $19.00 and was negotiating for a bookcase from this source.
From her annual report Mrs. Hight cited the library owed 12,272 books, had 1,477 borrowers including 359 from the rural area during the past year, 26,084 books were loaned in comparison to 24,887 for the previous year, and 300 books had been borrowed from the state library at the request of patrons. With this volume of patronage she said it may be necessary to ask for more help within another year.
Mrs. Hoch reported City Manager Tholen was holding interviews in reference to library roof repairs as requested by this board.
Mrs. Gatesman asked we keep in mind promoting the Francis Line travel lecture February 21 with proceeds to benefit the library.
Mr. Krieger said the matter of the library budget should be an order of business for the next board meeting tentatively set for January 9. The meeting was adjourned. Leslie B. Merritt, secretary. -

The meeting of the Howell Library Board was called to order at 7PM Present were Theodore Krieger, chairman, Leslie Merritt, secretary, Mrs. Mary Hoch, Mrs. Lillian Gatesman and Mrs. Gertrude McCloskey, members.
Minutes of the August 16 meeting were read and accepted.
Mrs. Hight librarian said she thought she could profit in giving services as a librarian by taking a college extension course in literature and was willing to do so if the board would authorize payment of the fees. Informal approval was given.
The Jaycee's Auxiliary was reported willing to give the library certain help this year as a club project.
Mrs. Gatesman reported Mr. Torone of Michigan State University would address the Friends of the Library at a public meeting in October.
Mr. Krieger reported on talks with Howard Warner and Theo. Shindorf with reference to the library roof. After an inspection Mr. Warner advised the whole cornice needs to be removed, new eaves toughing put on and the cornice rebuilt to be effective for scraping and moping. The Milbrand (see May 17 minutes pg. 105) recommendations were again discussed and seemed favored by the board. Mrs. Hoch agreed to report on the matter to the city councils the cost is beyond the appropriation of the board from the budget for the building and roof repairs.

It was reported there was a possibility of buying some bookcases from Citizens' Mutual. Attention was called to a new front screen door and a new electric fan. Mrs. Hight also mentioned as desirable for the library and outdoor bulletin board of the type used by churches It was reported the Children's Story Hour has resumed with help of Girl Schouts from 1 to 2 o'clock Mondays, but attendance was small. The librarian said designating June as a 'free month' for return of long past due books was in her estimation a success. She also said she was making no request for traditional summer closing hours this season but preferred the present 34 hour schedule, which complies with minimum state board requirements in cities under 5,000.
Mrs. Gatesman presented the proposal that the Library Board and the newly organized Friends of the Library sponsor a Francis Line picture to raise funds for the benefit of the library. He was available on February 21, 1957, and the school auditorium seating 730 could be secured for that date at 425. The sponsor s would provide an operator for the moving picture projector and advertise and promote the project. It was moved by Mrs. Hoch and supported b Mrs. Gatesman we enter into such a contract. The motion was carried. Contracts were then signed for Mr. Line's picture a feature that runs about one and one-half hours.
A tentative date for the next board meeting was set for Thursday, August 16. The meeting adjourned Leslie B. Merritt, Secretary.

A meeting of the Howell Library Board was called to order at 7PM. Present were Mrs. Karl Hoch, Mr. Theodore Krieger, Mrs. Bird Hight, the librarian and Mrs. Calvin Gatesman. Those absent were Mr. Leslie Merritt, Mrs. Gerald McCloskey.
Mrs. Calvin Gatesman was named recording secretary in the absence of Mr. Leslie Merritt.
The minutes of the July 11th meeting were read.
Mrs. Hight reported that sever rain caused leakage around the third window on the west side of the book shelf room. A discussion followed concerning the roof which has been in need of repair for some time. Mr. Krieger had talked with Mr. Shindorf, the janitor, who had suggested aluminum in the eaves where there is much leakage and then mopping with tar. It was decided to ask Mr. Tholen, the city engineer, to look it over and it was agreed upon by the board to have Mr. Krieger look into this matter with Tholen and Mr. Warner the sheet metal man.
Mr. Shindorf had reported the furnace in good condition.
Mrs. Hight said it was also suggested to her that a number of libraries have increased the fine on books to $.03. However this was not recommended for our library at this time. With the beginning of fall there will be no books loaned to people owing fines.
It was decided upon to subscribe to the Ann Arbor newspaper.

yet repairs needed to protect the building, it was decided to have the chairman consult further on the matter with the city clerk's office.
Mrs. Gatesman presented a receipt for $152.36 received from the State Library Fund which money had been deposited with the Howell city clerk.
The board set its next meeting for 7 PM June 20 and adjourned Leslie B. Merritt, Secretary.

A meeting of the Howell Library Board was called to order at 7PM Present were Leslie Merritt, Mrs. Karl Hoch and Mrs. Lillian Gatesman. Absent: Theodore Krieger and Mrs. Gerald McCloskey.
Ms. Merritt was named acting chairman for this meeting in the absence of Mr. Krieger.
Mrs. Gatesman presented a receipt for $75.21 representing the balance of state library aid money.
Mrs. Ina Hight, librarian gave a report. She mentioned Mr. Arnold had taken the deadwood out of trees on library property, except for a yellowwood tree which has had previous plastic surgery. this he anchored to an adjoining tree for the sake of safety should a storm endanger it but because of its condition recommended the board spare expense on it.
Mrs. Hight said she was receiving loan books from both the State and Pinckney libraries for use here.
Ralph Filkins was reported to have offered to match the best price which Mrs. Hight could secure on magazine renewals and told her of possible savings on multiple year subscriptions. The board members said they were agreeable to dealing with Mr. Filkins but advised multiple year renewals be kept within the budget item for magazines. -

Moved by Mrs. Hoch that the pay of Mrs. Warner be raised to $1.15 per hour. This was supported by Mrs. McCloskey and carried unanimously.
Mrs. Gatesman moved that board authorized payment of Mrs. Warner's expenses to attend the summer library workshop. This was supported by Ms. Merritt and carried unanimously.
Mrs. Gatesman reported on her interview with A.F. Monroe, city forester relative to trees on the library lawn. The latter had recommended one tree be cut down another pruned and surgery on a third. Mrs. Hight agreed to make inquiries to follow up the recommendations She informed Harry Arnold did tree surgery work and perhaps she could secure further recommendations from him.
The next board meeting was scheduled for May 16. Adjournment was at 8:30PM Leslie B. Merritt, Secretary

A meeting of the Howell Library Board was called to order at 7PM Present were Theodore Krieger, chairman, Leslie Merritt, secretary and Mrs. Lillian Gatesman. Absent: Mrs. Mary Hoch and Mrs. Gertrude McCloskey.
Mrs. Hight librarian called attention to 'blistering' of some plaster and paint in the stack room and was of the opinion this was caused by dampness from the eaves. She suggested a book fair to coincide with Children's Book Week in November. She said she also hoped to resume the children's story hour this summer and had enlisted the aid of Paul Bennett city recreation director and he in turn would seek help from the Senior Girl Scouts in the project.
Chairman Krieger read a letter from the Milbrand Mainenance Co. 21047 Schoenheer Rd, East Detroit in regard to their inspection and estimate of repairs to the library building roof. This estimate was $2,985 on their specification. After discussion and reference to previous consideration of this board, with the amount in excess of the budget estimate -

others in regard to an inspection of the roof.
April 19 was set for the date of the next meeting at which time it was decided to make a tour of the building for the benefit of the new board members.

A meeting of the Howell library board was called at 7PM Present were Theodore Krieger, chairman, Leslie Merritt, secretary, Mrs. Karl Hoch, Mrs. Gerald McCloskey and Mrs. Lillie Gatesman, members.
Minutes of the meeting of March 15 were read and approved.
Mrs. Hoch reported the city council had approved a 10% increase in the library janitor's salary.
Mr. Krieger said he was continuing efforts to have the building roof inspected for recommended repairs, then would report to the city authorities who had suggested proper procedure would probably be to advertise for bids for the work required.
Inspection of the building planned at the last board meeting was postponed to a later occasion.
Mr. Krieger read portions of a letter received from the State Library Board with information relative to qualifying for state grants of money.
Ina Hight, librarian reported the 'Michigan Room' ready for use and some books had been placed in it. She told that Mr. Shindorf inspected the furnace and had no repairs to recommend. A summer library workshop would be held at either St. Mary's or Higgins Lake, she reported. The district workshop was to be held May 10 at Adrian and it was expected Howell would be represented by Mrs. Hoh, Mrs. Gatesman, Mrs. Hight and Mrs. Warner. A report was given the board regarding the services of Miss Ruth Bennett, clerk.
The librarian reported Mrs. Lannen still hopeful but as yet unable to resume her duties as assistant librarian. Consequently, she reported Mrs. Warner was working an average of 18 hours a week at present and recomended -

The March meeting for the Howell Library Board was held at 7 o'clock Thursday evening, March 15, at the library. The following members were present: Chairman Theodore Krieger, Mrs. Calvin Gatesman and Mrs. Karl Hoch.
In the absence of the secretary the minutes of the previous meeting were read by Mrs. Gatesman.
Mrs. Hight librarian reported that Mrs. Lennen was still not able to be back at wwork and that her plans for the future were 'indefinite'. She also said that Mrs. Warner is now working 18 hours a week. Mrs. Hight has not been able to be at the desk as much as she would life because she was needed for the care of new books, filing of cards, etc. She also reported that she has not been able to find a suitable Lecto-graph as yet. Work on the Michigan room is progressing satisfactorily she said and no more roof leakage has been detected.
Mrs. Hight was requested by the chairman to direct the janitor to inspect the furnace for needed repairs and to remind him to prepare the lawn for mowing.
A discussion was held as to whether the trees on the back library lawn are too thick. Mrs. Gatesman was delayed to consult with City. Forester frank Monroe on the condition of the trees and also in regard to any changes that might be made in the planting at the front of the building.
Mrs. Hoch was appointed to follow up the budget request for 1956-1957, the budget total $10,07214 representing an $800 increase over that of the previous year.

Howell Michigan February 8, 1956
A City library board meeting was called to order at 7PM Present were Theodore Krieger, chairman, Leslie Merritt secretary, Mrs. Karl Hoch, Mrs. Lillian Gatesman and Mrs. Gerald McCloskey members.
Upon inquiry, Mrs. Hoch informed no action had been taken yet regarding a raise in pay for janitor services at the library to bring this in line with increases granted other city employees. Mr. Krieger said he made inquiry regarding Mr. Shindorf's eligibility for social security under such an increase and such would not be jeopardized.
Moved by Ms. Merritt and supported by Mrs. McCloskey that this board recommends to the city council that a 10% pay increase effective in February be made for janitor services at the library. Motion carried unanimously.
It was reported a leak from the roof was breaking plaster in one of the halls. Inasmuch as the city has agreed to seek bids on roof repair it was asked this matter be referred to the city clerk's' office.
After discussion the following proposed budget was adopted for 1956-1957 and the chairman agreed to present it to the city council as provided by the charter. -

Howell, Michigan January 18, 1956
A meting of the city library board was called to odder at 7PM. Present were Theodore Krieger, chairman, Leslie B. Merritt, secretary, Mrs. Karl Hoch, Mrs. Lilian Gatesman and Mrs. Gertrude McCloskey members.
Chairman Krieger announced Mrs. H. L. Williams had submitted her resignation as a library board member to the city council which was accepted. Mrs. Lillian Gatesman was appointed as her successor.
Under provisions of Howell's new city charter effective January 2, 1956 library board membership is increased to five persons. The mayor and council named Mrs. Karl Hoch and Mrs. Gertrude McCloskey to the unfilled appointments. Mrs. Hoch had previously been a member of the board ex offices.
Moved by Mrs. Hoch and supported by Mrs. Gatesman that the secretary write a letter of thanks to Mrs. Williams for her services as a member of this board.
The report of Ina Hight librarian was heard.
She proposed this library try for one week in the spring a 'free week' that has worked successfully in a couple of other libraries. On the designated days only, overdue books could be returned without payment of fines and 'lost' books returned without penalty. After discussion the board members offered no objections.
The librarian exhibited a 54 volume set of 'Great Books of the Western World' received through her request and without charge under a grant from the Old Dominion Foundation. Included are writings of 74 authors from the period of Homer and the Bible to the 20th century.
Mrs. Hight requested when the budget for the new year is prepared that about $75 be allowed for construction of bookcases two in the adult reading room and one in the children's room.
She also reported she is preparing by request a list of '100 best books' on the local library shelves and when it is ready she will give the list publicity.
Mrs. Hight advised Mrs. Stanley Warner was now employed as a part time clerk and thought she might qualify for an assistant librarian. Mrs. Lannen who has been on leave of absence for sickness, was reported hopeful of returning to work soon, perhaps on a part time basis.
Chairman Krieger read a letter from Theodore Shindorf requesting that consideration be given to a raise in pay for janitor services. Mrs. Hoch reported the city council did not increase pay for this service when other city employees received 10 per cent hikes last it jeopardize his eligibility for social security. However chairman Krieger said he would investigate the social security matter in relation to the Shindorfs and Mrs. Hoch was agreeable.
