    This is a portrait of Alfred Garland, Howell, Michigan.

    Alfred Garland was born in Sheffield, England in the 1850's, and died in Howell in May 1936.  He established with his brother, Arthur Garland, a tailoring business in downtown Howell.

  • Carmen Kypke, Pole Vaulter, 1960<br />Howell High School, Howell, Livingston, Michigan

    This is a portrait of Carmen Kypke, taken by Duane Zemper in 1960.  The photo is labeled "Held 1947 Pole Vault record, 11'6' for 20 years".

    An article in the Lansing State Journal dated May 18, 1951 described Carmen Krypke of Howell as leader in the class of pole vaulters in the Lansing area.    The Livingston County Press on May 23, 1951 reported that Carmen Kypke cleared the pole vault bar at 11 feet, 4 3/4 inches to establish a record for the Howell High School and to set a record for Wines Field in Ann Arbor.  His winning vault broke the field meet record by two inches.

    Carmen Kypke was born in 1933 in Chicago, Illinois.  After graduating from Howell High School in 1952, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956.  Mr. Kypke died in Montgomery, Alabama in 1987.

  • Mr. Andrew Jackson, Howell, Livingston, Michigan

    Andrew Jackson and his wife, Claudine Burkhart Jackson, farmed in Howell township for many years.  They also wrote a weekly column for the Livingston County Press, entitled, "Farm Folks".

    Robert E. Parker was born in Howell, Michigan. He is a graduate of Howell High School and practiced law in Howell, Michigan since 1973.

    Mr. Parker served on the City of Howell Planning Commission, Howell City Council, and as City of Howell Mayor.
    For many years, the Parker family resided in their home at 915 North Michigan Avenue (McPherson Mansion) while he was practicing law in Howell.  The Parker Ancestors migrated from Scotland and settled in Howell with the McPherson and Riddle families.

  • Charles W. Barber, Howell, Michigan

    This is a portrait of Charles W. Barber, Howell, Livington, Michigan.  Mr. Barber was born in 1830 in Washington, New York.  He came with his family to Green Oak Township in 1836.   Mr. Barber died at his residence in Howell in 1901.

    Charles W. Barber married Janette Peebles, daughter of J. Peebles in 1860.

    As an adult, he carried the mail for many years.  For the last 14 years of his life, he was the Proprietor of the Barber Hotel which was also known as the Howell Hotel.   The Barber Hotel was located near the Pere Marquette Depot in Howell.

  • Charles E. Holkins, Howell, Michigan

    This is a portrait of Charles E. Holkins.  He was born in Leslie Michigan in 1916, and died in Overland Park, Kansas in 1990.

    Mr. Holkins was proprietor of C. N. Holkins & Sons, of Howell, Michigan.  He was past president and chairman of First National Bank.  He was also past member of the board of Citizens Insurance Company of America.
