    This photograph is of the interior of the Midget Sandwich Shop, 319 East Grand River Avenue, Howell, Michigan, and was taken as part of documentation for the R/UDAT Study, 1984.  In view, taken during the R/UDAT Walking Tour is the Midget Sandwich Shop; the persons in the photograph are unknown. 

    In 1983, the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce applied for a R/UDAT (Regional/Urban Design Assistance Team) study, an American Institute of Architects program that brought a team of professionals to the city for a four-day period to study Howell's downtown, its ability to compete for regional shopping, and to make recommendations for improvements to re-vitalize the city.  The team, in 1984, during the study took photographs, interviewed people, held forums, and in the end provided an outline of strategies.

    This is a photograph of the 4 Mile House located on the northwest corner of West Grand River Avenue and Burkhart Road, 1933.  The address was 4020 West Grand River Avenue, Howell, Michigan.  In 1933, the Inn also had a service station which was owned by Charles Vincent; gas and oil were sold on the premises.   A gas pump is visible to the right.  The 4 Mile House was  a restaurant, and at one time, an inn.

    In the Livingston Republican, Charles Vincent announced that on May 7, 1933, the 4 Mile House would have a "Grand Opening", serving beer and lunches.

    Photographs of the store at 846 East Grand River Avenue, Howell, Michigan, 1949.    At that time, it was the home of the  J. R.Wylie Sales, Appliance Store.   The building just west of Wylie's Sale was Timbers Restaurant, and a portion of it is visible.

    This building was later home to A & P Food Store (1961), then Consumer's Discount Store, Dunham Sports, Shoe Store, and  Family Video Store.

    The store's grand opening was in October 1974, and it was owned and operated by William and Kathleen Denton.

    The store was located in the Howell Shopping Center.

    This is a photograph of the 200 block of East Grand River Avenue, Howell, Michigan, and includes the following building numbers: 209-211-213-215.

    The photograph appears to have been from the 1940's-1950's.  In 1952, 209 was Cozy Restaurant, 211 was Dairy Lunch, 213 was Udo's Bar, and 215 was Citzen's Mutual Printing Department.

    The date of the photograph is unknown.

    These photographs are of the Family Restaurant, 107 West Grand River Avenue, Howell, Michigan.  The person in the one picture is unknown.  Judging by the passing cars, this photograph may have been taken in the  1940's-1950's.  

    This restaurant was owned by the Gentry's: Howard and Stella, and later by son Robert.

    This is a picture of the Filkins Family Sandwich Grill, 121 West Grand River Avenue, Brighton, Michigan.  It was located  two blocks from hotel, and was operated by Ralph and Martha Filkins.

    The date of this photograph is unknown.  The restaurant was in operation in the 1940's.
