  • Grain Elevator, Byron, Michigan, C.H. & D.R.R., by Ed Beach

    This is a photograph developed from a glass negative of a grain elevator next to railroad tracks. The lettering says, "C.H. & D.R.R." which was the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railroad which was a company operating out of Ohio.  The location was Byron Michigan but the date of this photograph is unknown.

    On May 1, 1863, the CH&DRR leased the Dayton and Michigan Railroad in perpetuity. In 1891, it acquired the Cincinnati, Dayton and Chicago Railroad, while in March of that year it added the Cincinnati, Dayton and Ironton Railroad.

  • N. E. Miner and Sons General Store, Cohoctah, Michigan, about 1900

    This is a photograph of the interior of the N.E. Miner and Sons General Store, Cohoctah, Michigan.  It was included in the 1976 Howell Bicentennial History Book.  The store owner, Norris E. Miner, is on the right, and to the left is long time clerk, George Killin.  The store also housed the Cohoctah Post Office for many years.  Rolland Miner was postmaster from 1919 to 1950.  In 1944, the store was sold, and the post office moved across the street to what was known as the bank building.

    This is a photograph of a parade in Howell, Michigan, West Grand River Avenue at the intersection of Walnut Street.  The Winkelhaus Florist shop is in view.

    The reason for the parade and date are unknown.  The streets are bricked, and the cars appear to be from the 1940's - 1950's.  Spectators and a marching band are noted.

    This is a photograph taken of the storefronts on the 100 block of West Grand River Avenue, Howell, Michigan.  The street is snow covered and a horse and sleigh are in the foreground.  The businesses on the block include Homer N. Beach Dry Goods and William McPherson & Sons Dry Goods. 

    Homer N. Beach is "Going out of Business"; he died in July 1926.  The date of this photograph and the name of the person in the photograph are unknown.
