  • Young and Pohley's Meat Market, Howell, Michigan

    This is a photograph of the interior of a butcher shop, Young & Pohley's Meat Market, Howell, Michigan.  They were open during the 1890's and advertised being the premier meat supplier for Livingston County, Michigan.

    By 1898, it was E. F. Young & Sons Meat Market.  This market was located on the south side of the now Bank of Ann Arbor, 101 East Grand River Avenue, Howell, Michigan.

    This photograph shows the market prepared for the Christmas and New Year holidays.  The exact date and names of people in the photograph are unknown but it is believed to be from Christmas 1910.

  • Grand Opening of Wrigley Supermarket, Grocery Store, Howell, Michigan - 1963

    Wrigley Supermarket, opened in August 1963 at 505 E. Grand River Avenue, on the southeast corner of Grand River Avenue  & Fowler Streets, in Howell, Michigan.   The grocery store held a Grand Opening and Howell City Mayor Clifton W. Heller snipped a ceremonial ribbon.

    The Wrigley Supermarket was a 10,000 square foot newly constructed building with a 75 car parking lot.  The grocery store featured modern equipment, and mechanical handling, storing, and selling of a great variety of food products.

    The photographs are from the Open House.

    The local manager of the Wrigley Supermarket was George Courtright.

    Before there were grocery stores, the grocery wagon delivered provisions to rural areas. These wagons carried a bit of everything: furniture, clothing, spices, flour, fabric, and items needed to maintain a homestead.
